Let's Ride Pop Up

Last Sunday 8th April Ant and I headed over to the Brownlee Centre (Boddington Playing Fields) to help out at the Let’s Ride Pop Up event. Let’s Ride is a two-hour, family orientated, free cycling event held in Leeds twice a month. It is run by volunteers on behalf of HSBC and British Cycling. Families come along and are able to practise cycling on the 1 mile track. It is open to all ages and abilities. If you don’t have your own bike that’s not a problem, you can borrow one at the track for free! This makes the session accessible for everybody. There is also a children’s area in which younger children and less competent cyclists can get to grips with their bikes. We had a fantastic session on Sunday, Ant, Harry (a particularly good helper) and I were on reception, signing people in and sending them off to the track. It was great to see children and parents excited to rack up a few miles on their bikes.

In the second hour when the arrivals were quietening down, Ant and I were able to have a go ourselves. However, for some reason we were persuaded not to borrow a normal bicycle, oh no that would be too easy. We had a go at the hand bikes. Hand bikes are powered by your arms and you steer with your feet, simple in theory, in practise it’s actually rather difficult! Especially going uphill. My fellow Leeds Girls Can ambassador, Breeze Ride leader and friend Kirsty gave me a cheeky push to get me going (don’t tell Ant – he had to do all the hard work himself!). Then we decided that we would have a go on a tandem. A tandem is a bicycle built for two people. It was hilarious trying to coordinate our pedalling to power up the hill and then trying to keep steady zooming down.

We had a really fun afternoon and I would recommend giving it a go if you live in the Leeds area! You can find out more information and see what other events British Cycling has to offer in Leeds, or indeed elsewhere in Britain! Just make sure your tandem partner is good at steering…

Active Em on tour: Koh Lanta, Thailand

Time of year visited: Mid October Favourite place visited: Klong Khong Beach Favourite food: Vegetarian Med Brunch at Kunda Restaurant Favourite activity: Snorkelling (apart from when I thought I might die) Most random thing that happened: The host at our hostel rubbing talcum powder on our hands to make us better at pool (whilst he was wearing a towel) There’s a strong chance that you might get this blog post quite soon after the Krabi post because this weekend we are at the Kuala Lumpur Major Dota 2 Competition (video game). Ant has dragged me a long and as much as I try and watch the games I just can’t get into it so I’ll just sit here and write while he watches magical heroes fight... So! We travelled to the Thai island of Koh Lanta by mini bus from Ao Nang. Our hotel offered better prices than the numerous tourist offices in the town. It took about three hours and was a really easy way to get there. We stayed at a hostel/ guesthouse type place called ‘Peace Lanta M...

Leeds Girls Can Clubbercise

Despite the snow we enjoyed a successful International Women’s Day in Leeds! Our main event was the Leeds Girls Can Clubbercise session which took place in the middle of the Trinity Centre (yes that’s right, surrounded by shoppers and commuters) in the evening. Leeds Girls Can ran two hours of Clubbercise for anybody who wanted to take part. It was fantastic to see women and men joining in with the International Women’s Day celebrations. We had all ages amongst our ranks, the youngest and arguably the cutest being Sienna, age 4. She was definitely the best out of us all, she didn’t want to stop. Hopefully she will remember the event as she gets older, going through life knowing that girls can do anything. That is why we exist, to show people that they can achieve anything, even when it's out of their comfort zone.  You may think that we looked like a bunch of crazy people dancing in the middle of a shopping centre but there was a very important purpose for it. We like to show that ...

Active Em on tour : Bangkok

Hi! So here am I, writing this blog post on my tablet in Ho Chi Minh City airport, waiting to board a flight to Da Nang. It seems like I will be writing the blog posts about countries a little while after I have left them. Mostly because I don’t know what I really think of a place until I’ve left it and most of the time I’m too busy trying to get my head around where I am to be able to write about it! We arrived in Bangkok on 10th October, after making our way down to Heathrow, onto the 12 hour flight, after figuring out the airport link train and to our hostel via a dodgy, definitely overpriced taxi. My initial thoughts on Bangkok; humid, chaotic, colourful and smelly. We stayed in the old quater of the city, which is the most popular location for budget hotels and hostels. We were too exhausted to be interesting on our first night in the city but we did make it out for some Thai street food. We found that in every case in Thailand, the cheaper the food, the more tasty it was. On our ...
