This Girl Can Blog!

This is just a quick one to say Hi! I’m still here. I haven’t posted anything for quite a while as university restarted and I have been up to my eyeballs in reading and start of the year fun and games. I have been to a few ‘Give it a Go’ sessions, these are sessions run by different societies here at the University of Leeds that allow you to go along and try something new. I will be writing about my experiences trying outdoor climbing and ballroom dancing in the near future, keep your eyes peeled.

One of the reasons why I haven’t posted anything is because I have been sorting out something very exciting... I am now officially a Leeds ambassador for the This Girl Can campaign. You might have heard of This Girl Can? It's a campaign run by Sport England, designed to empower women and girls of all ages to get active in whatever way they want, with no fear of judgement and empower them to get out there and take part in sports activities with other women. My role is to be a writer and blogger for the Leeds branch of the campaign, sharing my experiences of This Girl Can events, classes, activities, races, you name it, I am likely to write about it.

I was so excited to be offered this opportunity as the campaign’s message is pretty much exactly the same as I try to get across in my blog! Most of the posts that I make now will be in relation to This Girl Can and will be available to see on the Leeds Girls Can website (about to be launched) and of course, here on my own site. I am excited to share this exciting new phase in my active life with you all!
Here is a link to the national  This Girl Can website, the Leeds Girls Can website will be launched soon...

Active Em on tour: Koh Lanta, Thailand

Time of year visited: Mid October Favourite place visited: Klong Khong Beach Favourite food: Vegetarian Med Brunch at Kunda Restaurant Favourite activity: Snorkelling (apart from when I thought I might die) Most random thing that happened: The host at our hostel rubbing talcum powder on our hands to make us better at pool (whilst he was wearing a towel) There’s a strong chance that you might get this blog post quite soon after the Krabi post because this weekend we are at the Kuala Lumpur Major Dota 2 Competition (video game). Ant has dragged me a long and as much as I try and watch the games I just can’t get into it so I’ll just sit here and write while he watches magical heroes fight... So! We travelled to the Thai island of Koh Lanta by mini bus from Ao Nang. Our hotel offered better prices than the numerous tourist offices in the town. It took about three hours and was a really easy way to get there. We stayed at a hostel/ guesthouse type place called ‘Peace Lanta M...

Leeds Girls Can Clubbercise

Despite the snow we enjoyed a successful International Women’s Day in Leeds! Our main event was the Leeds Girls Can Clubbercise session which took place in the middle of the Trinity Centre (yes that’s right, surrounded by shoppers and commuters) in the evening. Leeds Girls Can ran two hours of Clubbercise for anybody who wanted to take part. It was fantastic to see women and men joining in with the International Women’s Day celebrations. We had all ages amongst our ranks, the youngest and arguably the cutest being Sienna, age 4. She was definitely the best out of us all, she didn’t want to stop. Hopefully she will remember the event as she gets older, going through life knowing that girls can do anything. That is why we exist, to show people that they can achieve anything, even when it's out of their comfort zone.  You may think that we looked like a bunch of crazy people dancing in the middle of a shopping centre but there was a very important purpose for it. We like to show that ...

Active Em on tour : Bangkok

Hi! So here am I, writing this blog post on my tablet in Ho Chi Minh City airport, waiting to board a flight to Da Nang. It seems like I will be writing the blog posts about countries a little while after I have left them. Mostly because I don’t know what I really think of a place until I’ve left it and most of the time I’m too busy trying to get my head around where I am to be able to write about it! We arrived in Bangkok on 10th October, after making our way down to Heathrow, onto the 12 hour flight, after figuring out the airport link train and to our hostel via a dodgy, definitely overpriced taxi. My initial thoughts on Bangkok; humid, chaotic, colourful and smelly. We stayed in the old quater of the city, which is the most popular location for budget hotels and hostels. We were too exhausted to be interesting on our first night in the city but we did make it out for some Thai street food. We found that in every case in Thailand, the cheaper the food, the more tasty it was. On our ...
