The miracle answer to enjoying running = friendship

I enjoy running but let’s be honest it can be a lot of effort. The other day I didn’t feel too great. The temperature was high, 29 degrees centigrade and the pollen count was HIGH. My friends and family know that I suffer badly from hay fever because I’m constantly moaning about it. I felt terrible all day because of it and very very tired. I lay down on the sofa to flick through my phone and ended up falling asleep for an hour and a half. It is important to listen to your body and not force yourself to train if you aren’t up to it.

However, I had an evening run set with my good friend Rach. I did consider cancelling but runs with Rach are the best kind. I find myself thinking of it as more of time to catch up and have fun than do really difficult exercise. That being said, Rach has an amazing ability to keep me going when the run is getting a bit tricky. We have a system when we go up hills where she will pick a point we have to make it to and then again and again until we reach the top. When I am by myself these hills have a huge mentally draining effect on me.

We went on our run and I was very glad that we did. Despite it being very sweaty by the time we reached the view point halfway through the run I was feeling energised and happier. If you know that you are capable of getting out and doing something then you should try and get moving, it will make you feel better physically and mentally too. By turning your exercise into a social occasion, you will be more inclined to want to get out there and spend time with your friend. If that friend is able to push you to try that little bit to run faster even better! In July Rach, my other pal Ant and I are all running the Leeds 10km which I am already looking forward to. I know as a team we will have fun and a bit of a laugh and isn’t that what life is all about?
Em x
(The stone was a bit bird-pooish, sorry Rach for making you lean against it)

Active Em on tour: Koh Lanta, Thailand

Time of year visited: Mid October Favourite place visited: Klong Khong Beach Favourite food: Vegetarian Med Brunch at Kunda Restaurant Favourite activity: Snorkelling (apart from when I thought I might die) Most random thing that happened: The host at our hostel rubbing talcum powder on our hands to make us better at pool (whilst he was wearing a towel) There’s a strong chance that you might get this blog post quite soon after the Krabi post because this weekend we are at the Kuala Lumpur Major Dota 2 Competition (video game). Ant has dragged me a long and as much as I try and watch the games I just can’t get into it so I’ll just sit here and write while he watches magical heroes fight... So! We travelled to the Thai island of Koh Lanta by mini bus from Ao Nang. Our hotel offered better prices than the numerous tourist offices in the town. It took about three hours and was a really easy way to get there. We stayed at a hostel/ guesthouse type place called ‘Peace Lanta M...

Leeds Girls Can Clubbercise

Despite the snow we enjoyed a successful International Women’s Day in Leeds! Our main event was the Leeds Girls Can Clubbercise session which took place in the middle of the Trinity Centre (yes that’s right, surrounded by shoppers and commuters) in the evening. Leeds Girls Can ran two hours of Clubbercise for anybody who wanted to take part. It was fantastic to see women and men joining in with the International Women’s Day celebrations. We had all ages amongst our ranks, the youngest and arguably the cutest being Sienna, age 4. She was definitely the best out of us all, she didn’t want to stop. Hopefully she will remember the event as she gets older, going through life knowing that girls can do anything. That is why we exist, to show people that they can achieve anything, even when it's out of their comfort zone.  You may think that we looked like a bunch of crazy people dancing in the middle of a shopping centre but there was a very important purpose for it. We like to show that ...

Active Em on tour : Bangkok

Hi! So here am I, writing this blog post on my tablet in Ho Chi Minh City airport, waiting to board a flight to Da Nang. It seems like I will be writing the blog posts about countries a little while after I have left them. Mostly because I don’t know what I really think of a place until I’ve left it and most of the time I’m too busy trying to get my head around where I am to be able to write about it! We arrived in Bangkok on 10th October, after making our way down to Heathrow, onto the 12 hour flight, after figuring out the airport link train and to our hostel via a dodgy, definitely overpriced taxi. My initial thoughts on Bangkok; humid, chaotic, colourful and smelly. We stayed in the old quater of the city, which is the most popular location for budget hotels and hostels. We were too exhausted to be interesting on our first night in the city but we did make it out for some Thai street food. We found that in every case in Thailand, the cheaper the food, the more tasty it was. On our ...
